Dragon Ball Zoku is the doujinshi adaptation of MasakoX’s “What if Raditz Turned Good,” telling the story of what might have happened if Raditz had been able to avoid Piccolo’s special beam cannon.

What’s a doujinshi?

It’s the really weeby way of saying… a fan comic.

Why is your comic backwards?

This comic is actually a manga, so it reads from right to left just like a Japanese manga would. There’s a whole diagram to show you how to read it here.

When does it update?

Updates are every Tuesday.

Only 1 day a week?! Why so slow?

A few reasons. First, I work a full time job and can only do this in my spare time. I, unfortunately, have to eat and pay the bills.

Second, I have not drawn in Toriyama-sensei’s style since… ever? My personal manga style is closer to a mix of Rumiko Takahashi and Yoshihiro Togashi. But to me, Goku just doesn’t look like Goku without his trademark gi, hair, and angular style, so things will be starting a little slow.

It looks like you’re tracing pages. Are you tracing pages?

For the early chapters, yes. As I’ve said above, I’ve never really drawn in Toriyama’s style before this project, so I’m tracing pages where nothing really changes from the original story line and to learn his style. This will only last for the earlier chapters, so please bear with me while I learn!

Why isn’t it in color? I don’t read black and white.

Then you’re missing out on 48 volumes of adventure in Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, and a lot more manga besides. Creating comics in black and white allows me to pump out pages a lot faster than if I take the time to color them in, and it leaves me some time to work on other projects, too. Plus, there’s just something so clean and classic about a black and white comic…

Why is it called “Zoku?” That’s a weird title.

Depending on the context and kanji it’s paired with, the kanji I used (zoku) can mean family, group, race, people or clan. I thought it was appropriate since Raditz’s survival means there will be more focus on family dynamics and Saiyan heritage.
